The production of film, television and audiovisual media in general involves complex processes that constantly (re)configure and (re)articulate connections and relationships between individuals, organizations and institutions. As a rule, these processes are invisible to most viewers when they watch a movie or television series. However, the way in which these processes take place not only has a huge impact on the results we see on our screens, but also has cultural and societal implications.In this introductory course we will approach the field of Media Production research, an interdisciplinary field that has made interesting contributions within film studies. Based on various theories and methods, Media Production Studies explores the cultural practices of those who participate in media production at different levels and in different roles.
This course introduces students to the nature of cultural production and the media studies research methods. It will illustrate the fundamentals of production research: formulating research questions and designing the research. The students will learn about qualitative and quantitative research approaches, experimental design, sampling, analysis, ethics in research, and research communication. The classes will demonstrate how each method can often complement each other while developing a more comprehensive perspective on media production research. The course aims to develop students’ abilities to analyze the contexts of contemporary media and cultural production and design their own research with selecting appropriate research methods.
