Dr. Roman Mauer is Senior Lecturer (Akademischer Oberrat) in Film Studies at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU). He completed his degree and PhD in Mainz (2004, dissertation on Jim Jarmusch). He subsequently taught at University of Television and Film Munich, Film University Babelsberg Konrad Wolf and Mainz University of Applied Science. Since 2008, he is a member of the academic staff at JGU, serving among others as program coordinator (2008–10) and contributing to the development of the BA and MA degree programs (2008–17). His work includes international lecture series as well as innovative and media practice projects in cooperation with ZDF/arte, the Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau Foundation, Deutsche Kinemathek Berlin and Filmuniversität Babelsberg. From 2021 to 2024, he headed the DFG-funded project TIB AV-Analytics at JGU in cooperation with TIB Hannover. He is co-editor of the book series Film, Fernsehen, New Media (4 vols.) and most recently of Dinge im Film (2022), Angewandte Filmtheorie (2023) and Alles im Blick: Perspektiven einer intermedialen Panoramatik (2025).
