Inhalt
In his essay "Cultural Identity and Diaspora" (1990), Stuart Hall analyzes the significance of diversity, hybridity, and difference for the experience and aesthetics of diasporas. “Diaspora identities are those which are constantly producing and reproducing themselves anew, through transformation and difference.” In this English-language course, I’d like to zero in on the aesthetic and political significance of the concept of diaspora or diasporism for contemporary Jewish life and culture. In the face of particular states, like Germany and the United States, and established Jewish organizations (e.g. Germany’s Central Council of Jews) strengthening their commitment to Zionism and the politics of Israel, many younger Jews have been turning instead to the historical, religious and political significance of the Jewish diaspora. We will pick up these debates and inquire into their possible relevance for film and media studies. Following Hall, who was writing about African and Caribbean diasporas, we will ask about the (cinematic) aesthetics of the Jewish diaspora? We will explore Jewish religious perspectives on diaspora by Daniel and Jonathan Boyarin; anti-racist and socialist political perspectives from Melanie Kaye/Kantrowicz (“radical diasporism”); and anti-nationalist leftist accounts by Molly Crabapple (the Jewish Bund’s idea of “doikayt” or “hereness”). We will also situate the concept of diaspora in relation to other terms such as “exilic”, “postcolonial”, or “transnational”. Hamid Naficy’s reflections on exilic and diasporic filmmaking in his 2001 book An Accented Cinema will be a further point of reference. The course is thus a research seminar on conceptual and political history, focusing on the Jewish diaspora but opening onto comparative critical considerations of the cultural work carried out by those of us who are at home where we live. Film selections include: artist Yael Bartana’s trilogy about the Jewish Renaissance Movement in Poland; Madame Rosa (Moshe Mizrahi, 1977); News from Home (Chantal Akerman, 1976); and Measures of Distance (Mona Hatoum, 1988).Termine
