Focusing on the temporality of waiting, the block seminar explores the intersections of film theory, aesthetics and contemporary art. Waiting is often an unpleasant experience linked to inaction, boredom and oppression, that is also associated with hope, desire and inspiration. Using this contradiction as a starting point, we examine waiting as a metaphor to explore power relations and their aesthetic dimensions. Waiting emerges as both an oppressive force and a potential site of resistance, central to decolonial, queer, and feminist critiques of progress and modernity. The seminar centers the performative and filmic practices of Basel Abbas, Ruanne Abou-Rahme, Ana Mendieta, Lorraine O’Grady, Jack Smith and Andy Warhol among others. Through close readings of selected artworks, we explore questions surrounding the temporal dimensions of moving image art: What political and ethical potential does the moving image hold? How does it modulate spectators’ hopes and expectations? Can such aesthetic experiences transform waiting’s passivity into collective resistance?
